Black Romance Podcast: Katrina Jackson

Today’s guest is Katrina Jackson, best-selling writer of over twenty novels. She joins me to discuss her prolific career. Katrina discusses some of her early reading practices, writing her first romance, a self-published book titled Encore, and why she publishes affirming images of Black women. She also recounts how her life as a pre and post tenured historian in the Academy informs some of her novels’ themes. She and I also discuss several of her books: From Scratch, Office Hours, The Hitman, Encore, Grand Theft New Year’s Eve, and her current release Back in the Day.

#fallsonlove episode 064: INDIGO, FROM SCRATCH ft. KATRINA JACKSON

Yoooooo, chopping it up with the homie, author Katrina Jackson, discussing Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. As is the custom of this show, we meander a bit from the book in specific to speak to the greatness that is Ms. Bev, the progressive integrity that is housed within her work, the reverence for which she treats the material within historical contexts, and just have a good ol' time chatting it up.

Episode 02-14: Black Poly Romance Is Dead?

Jhen takes over the entire month of November and encourages the discourse on BOOKS in celebration of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). We’re definitely talking to romance authors and other bookish people about non-monogamous representation and kick it off with Katrina Jackson!

You might remember Katrina from Episode 01-09 and Jhen continues that conversation but asks a different question: Why are there not a lot of Black non-monogamous romance novels?

Katrina Jackson writes the types of stories that she would want to read, you know, with fat black girls and masturbation scenes. In this episode, Karen and Princess talked with her about her writing journey from fanfiction to self-published author with a bookshelf of titles. We also commiserated on pushing from diversity as a black queer woman and by the end, we became best friends.

Episode 49: Historian And Romance Author Katrina Jackson

What do you do when you can’t find anything you want to read? You write it yourself. After plumbing the depths of Amazon for erotic romance featuring queer POC and coming up empty, Katrina Jackson took matters into her own hands and started writing her own. Seventeen books later, we chatted with her about why word-of-mouth is still the best marketing tool—even for self-published authors!—why publishing her work on platforms besides Amazon allows her to reach a much wider international market, and why cats (!) have been crucial to her books.

052. The Modern Romance Canon

Who among us hasn't started a project and then realized that you've inadvertently wandered into a longstanding and contentious debate? I enlist the help of two experts to unravel why I started the Shelf Love Modern Romance Canon project. First, Katrina Jackson helps me unravel some of the ways my professional and educational background made me think this was a logical thing to do. Then, Eric Selinger gives some backstory into the academic and institutional reasons canons exist, and why those who study, read, and write the popular romance genre have been circling this question for decades and will continue into the future. It's a story of nostalgia, red tape, gatekeeping, search engine optimization, and my unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

049. Blind Date With A Book Boyfriend by Lucy Eden with Katrina Jackson

Katrina Jackson never actually left: we talk about Scandal, why impermanence and entropy are the root cause for readers' desire for a happily ever after - or at least according to my theory, and how Katrina's research on Black romance as liberation is coming along. We also discuss Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend by Lucy Eden, a true romcom novella that turns the one-day courtship trope on its head.

Katrina Jackson, erotic romance author by night, historian by day, joins the podcast once again to talk about polyamory in romance novels, how these relationships challenge genre conventions, and how communication is key in ALL relationships. CW: We talk about the treatment of enslaved people in the Civil War, including a character’s PTSD as a result of being enslaved. This character has suicidal ideation.
